POSITION SUMMARY
Under the functional direction of the Health Director, the Patient Advocate will primarily ensure the Mushkegowuk citizens understand their rights as patients within the health care system. Patient Advocate will work with clients, families and communities to ensure access to quality health care recognizing our inherent treaty rights as Mushkegowuk citizens.
REQUIREMENTS
- Degree in Health, Nursing, or Social Work or Diploma in Health, Nursing or Social work with a combination of experience
- 2 -5 years of experience in the health sector or acute hospital setting
- 2-5 years patient care experience
- Advocacy Certification and willingness to achieve
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of FNIHB/NIHB programs and services
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of regional, provincial and federal legislation
- Understanding of Canadian Health Law and willingness to learn
- Understanding of Cree culture and practices in Mushkegowuk Region
- Ability to use and understand Electronic Medical Records System (PS Suites)
- Excellent computer skills
- Excellent public speaking skills
- Sound knowledge of negotiation skills and alternative dispute resolutions processes
- Requires strong problem solving, decision making and critical thinking skills
- Excellent written and verbal skills
- Ability to work independently or with a team
- Capability to maintain and respect confidentiality and Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) guidelines
- Responsive to social situations and immediate needs of clients and families
- License in good standing with College of Nurses/College of Social Workers
- Ability to speak Cree is an asset
- Requires a class G driver’s license
- Must be able to travel frequently
