JOB SUMMARY:
The First Nations Band Representative will advocate for, and support Timiskaming First Nation children and youth involved in child and family services cases across Ontario and Quebec, regardless of their place of residence. The primary responsibility of this role is to ensure that their voices are heard in court and that their cultural identity is respected and reflected in all decision-making processes.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Speak up for TFN children and youth in child protection court cases
· Work with child welfare agencies and other service providers to support families
· Meet with families, gather background information, and help create care plans
· Keep track of all notifications from child welfare agencies and respond on time
· Join settlement meetings and other required meetings with families and caregivers to help plan services and support
· Maintain confidentiality and treat all families with respect and fairness
· Help find foster homes and volunteers in the community
· Work with lawyers to prepare court documents and represent TFN in complex cases
· Speak in court when needed, both in writing and in person
· Step in during family emergencies to protect children and prevent harm
· Join child welfare workers on home visits and investigations
· Support youth who are leaving care, up to age 26
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
· Degree or diploma in Social Work, Law Clerk, Child and Youth Work, or a related field
· Bilingual in English and French
· Valid drivers license, access to a vehicle, and willing to travel on short notice
· Must pass a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check
SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:
· Understand Bill C-92 and recent changes in child welfare for Indigenous families
· Know about TFN programs, culture, and the challenges First Nations face
· Comfortable working in different settings and with people from all backgrounds
· Able to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
· Good at staying organized, handling multiple tasks, and setting priorities
· Can work independently and as part of a team
· Represent TFN in a professional and respectful way, keeping information confidential
· Willing to attend training and cultural events as needed
