ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Northern Sun Mining currently has an exciting opportunity for a Health and Safety Coordinator to join our team. Reporting to the Senior Human Resources Advisor, this position plays a vital role in promoting a safe and healthy workplace, ensuring regulatory compliance, and fostering a strong culture of safety across all levels of our operations. Please note that this is not a camp-based position. The current schedule for this position is Monday-to-Friday, 8 hours per day.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop, implement, and maintain health and safety programs to reduce risks, prevent workplace injuries, and comply with relevant legislation and company standards.
- Coordinate and track safety training programs for employees and supervisors to meet site-specific and legal requirements.
- Create and implement a monthly safety program for use by all frontline supervisors.
- Support supervisors in ensuring all workers have completed the necessary training and applicable modules prior to being assigned work tasks.
- Investigate workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses. Identify root causes, develop corrective actions, and monitor the effectiveness of implemented solutions.
- Conduct regular workplace safety inspections and audits to identify hazards, assess risks, and ensure compliance with safety policies and procedures.
- Maintain safety-related databases, including training records and incident reports.
- Act as a resource for the JHSC, ensuring compliance with OHSA standards and providing guidance to committee members.
- Maintain, develop or update emergency response plans or procedures.
- Procure all safety-related materials and oversee the management of the PPE program.
- Ensure the completion and issuance of all Ministry of Labour (MOL) compliance documents.
- Maintain and oversee all aspects of workers’ compensation claims, ensuring compliance with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) regulations, and support injured employees through their return-to-work (RTW) processes.
- Additional tasks as assigned by management.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of experience in a health and safety role within a mining environment.
- CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) designation is considered an asset.
- Valid driver’s license.
- In-depth knowledge of health and safety legislation and best practices.
- Proven experience in coordinating safety programs in an industrial and/or mining environment.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage employees and foster a safety-first mindset.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
