Job Synopsis:
This summer position is designed to give a student the opportunity to do exciting work in collaboration with Indigenous people and communities. Our team has a thirty-year history working together with many partners. We build Indigenous-Settler relationships and create opportunities for cross cultural learning and understanding.

We also help Indigenous-led initiatives that support Indigenous artists (the Nika Artisans project) as well as food sovereignty, clean water and Truth and Reconciliation.

This role is an 8 week/35 hour weekly contract.

This job will be based in Timmins and will collaborate with team members in Kitchener and Niagara regions.  Our program is responsive to the needs and requests of Indigenous partners, and therefore new opportunities are always arising. Some of the specific tasks we anticipate working on this summer are outlined below under Key Responsibilities.

To be eligible based on Canada Summer Jobs Requirements, youth must:

meet all of the requirements of the CSJ programbe a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment and,have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.**International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible. As the objective of the Canada Summer Jobs program is to support youth entering the Canadian labour market, the temporary nature of an international student’s time in Canada does not allow for a long-term connection to the labour market.

 

Key Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

Assist with the development and implementation of engagement opportunities such as a learning tour designed to help educate non-Indigenous people through a week of hands-on learning in the Timmins area.

Help organize and attend Niska Artisan sales in Timmins and surrounding areas – selling crafts made by Indigenous artisans from Northern Ontario – may require some evening/weekend work 

Help to create social media content to promote the Niska Artisan project

Help to develop stories to promote the Healing Fund, designed to support Indigenous-led truth and reconciliation initiatives Assist with logistics for Indigenous Peoples Day events in the Timmins area.

Help with organizing logistics for the All Nations Grand River Water Walk

Help to organize and implement a Timmins Learning Tour, a weeklong learning experience focused on our work with Indigenous communities  

Assist a local partner in creating and distributing quilts for residential school survivors  

Assist with maintenance of the Remembering Place Garden (called Kiskisowin in Cree) at the Timmins MCC office

Help to execute food sovereignty partnership plans

Attend local Indigenous-led events, initiatives and teachings (including powwows)

Other Responsibilities:

Perform other job related duties as assignedParticipate in a local faith community, being willing to use personal gifts within this community and model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful interaction with others

Base salary: $19.2. 6 % vacation pay will be included in each pay deposit
