Land-Based Recreation Specialist
Job Summary:
Reporting to the Early Years Director and the Director of Child and Youth Services, the Land- Based Recreation Specialist will be responsible for cultural program support to the Early Years Department. The Land-Based Recreation Specialist will work directly with the department’s families, community members and staff members to create a land-based approach to education. The Land-Based Specialist will work in the Education Centre Primarily creating and leading age-appropriate recreational activities.
Key Responsibilities:
· Work with the culture & early years department to design a land-based education curriculum to add to the start of our Nature Education Centre.
· Assist in the Education Centre to follow through with cultural programming
· Interact and engage with children and families based on their developmental needs
· Network with parents and guardians for the purpose of designing culturally appropriate activities
· Work alongside other departments to support programming and to support the needs of the families and children of the Nation.
· Maintain accurate administration filing, documentation and incident reports.
· Follow AAN Education Centres Policies and AAN Policies regarding confidentiality, social media use, and professional conduct.
· Support families and children in their cultural identity in age-appropriate ways
· Provide support to manager and other staff members for community events
· Receive guidance by way of Elders, Knowledge Keepers and Language Speakers to support the cultural programming.
· Provide support in the Education Centre on the daily basis.
· Facilitate land-based programming including but not limited to fires, outdoor cooking, medicine harvesting, cultural trips etc.
· Have knowledge about traditional parenting.
Qualifications:
· Completion of high school diploma and or equivalent
· Knowledge of Algonquin language and culture
· Experience working with children and youth
· Knowledge of child development
· Knowledge of Land-Based Education
· Certified or willing to be certified in Mental Health First Aid, First Aid/CPR
· Demonstrate knowledge and or understanding of Indigenous Perspectives, First Nation cultures, and Traditional Philosophies.
· Must have a valid driver’s License and provide a clean drivers abstract
· Must have access to a reliable vehicle
· Must be available to work outside of normal business working hours and weekends when required.
· Diploma in ECE, Child and Youth Service Worker or related is greatly encouraged but not required.
· Metis, Indigenous Status is encouraged but not required.
· Good communication, organization and teamwork skills
· Willing and able to work outside
