The Penhorwood Mill Manager manages production processes of talc products needed to meet customer requirements. With input and direction provided by the Canadian Operations Manager, directs and coordinates activities of Mill and Maintenance Supervisors, production, and maintenance workers for the safe, clean, efficient, quality, and profitable production of Company products.
KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Management of Penhorwood mill operations and associated bulk rail loadout facility.
- Fully supports the location health, safety and environmental and quality (HSEQ) programs by overseeing their implementation, maintenance, and enforcement as well as compliance with corporate programs.
- Confers with management personnel to establish safety, production, and quality standards.
- Coordinates implementation of location safety programs in compliance with corporate safety program, provincial and federal Occupational Health, and Safety regulations.
- Develops budget and cost controls.
- Applies knowledge of milling processes to resolve problems.
- Obtains data regarding types, quantities, specifications, and delivery dates for product orders.
- Plans and directs production activities and in keeping with effective operation and cost factors.
- Schedules production through coordination with customer service to properly meet customer demands and needs.
- Reviews and analyzes production, quality control, maintenance, and operational reports to determine causes on non-conformity with production specifications and operating or production problems.
- Directs and coordinates the activities of maintenance personnel, either personally or through subordinate supervisor(s), to properly repair, maintain, fabricate and/or install equipment and facilities.
- Consults with senior manager and staff, as appropriate, to set location objectives, resolve problems, lower costs, and improve location performance in quality, safety, and/or productivity.
- Reviews and analyzes production, quality control, maintenance, and operational reports to determine causes of non-conformity with production specifications and production or maintenance problems.
- Assists with management of process optimization and capital projects at the location to insure the development and implementation of cost-effective programs and plans.
- Coordinates activities with outside contractors, suppliers, and vendors and consults with cost control and purchasing personnel to assure cost-effective purchase of goods and services.
- Administers human resources policies at the location. Conducts investigations to resolve or effect settlement of problems/grievances and consults with location and corporate human resources for advice and counsel.
- Maintains courteous, professional relationships with company line and staff functions, outside contractors, customers, and government agencies.
- Leads and participate in HSEQ and HR investigations. Responsible for closure of incidents and implementation of associated remedial actions.
- Communicates and presents monthly plant performance reviews to senior management team.
- Manages and orders critical supplies for the operation.
- Month end production reporting for Canadian Operations.
- Weekly and monthly report of plant performance vs established metrics.
- Confers with Canadian Operations Manager and engineering staff to develop operating methods and procedures designed to eliminate operation problems and improve product quality.
- Supports and assists with process optimization and capital projects and ensures cost effective implementation.
- Oversees compliance with Contractor Management policies and procedures.
- Support and administers Human Resource policies, conducts investigations to resolve or effect settlement of problems / grievances and consults with HR for advice and counsel.

- Organizational skills will be necessary for organizing, scheduling and prioritizing location production and maintenance activities, conducting meetings, providing training, and overseeing the implementation, maintenance, and enforcement of various programs.
- Analytical and statistical skills are needed to evaluate opportunities for improvement or optimization of processes, quality, safety, or other operational resources as well as to resolve problems.
- Planning skills are needed to ensure that timely completion of programs and objectives satisfy legal and corporate objectives.
- Financial skills are necessary to manage budget and location expenses as well as to evaluate projects and improvement opportunities.
- Training and team building skill will be needed to improve individual competencies as well as develop focused group action.
- Communications skills will be used to interact with employees at all levels of the organization as well as external customers and to develop programs, procedures and systems that are usable and understandable in the workplace.
- Delegation skills are necessary to plan, direct and assign work.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience requirements:
- Preference given to a bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year university, preferably in engineering or other technical discipline. Graduation from a college technologist course is also accepted.
- 5 to 10+ years of experience managing people.
- 6+ Years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of plant operations. General knowledge of maintenance methods and procedures. Knowledge of engineering practices and principles and minerals processing technology preferred.
Knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics:
- Computer skills are required to manage and utilize data management software packages.
- Interpersonal skills are necessary in order to develop teamwork within the location as well as be able to work well with both internal and external customers without major conflicts.
- Leadership skills are needed to assure that production and maintenance employees as well as staff reporting to the function work toward common corporate/location goals and objectives.
- Administrative skills are required to manage paperwork, meet reporting requirements, oversee management of various systems, and ensure that employees have the resources needed to execute their activities safely and efficiently.
SPECIFIC ASPECTS:
- Knowledge of wet mineral processing principles and their practical application highly desirable, including crushing, grinding, size classification, flotation, solid-liquid separation and thermal drying.
- Knowledge of mining/minerals plant operations in cold, northern climates.
- Practical knowledge in application of continuous improvement and operational excellence concepts.
- Good prioritization and time management skills
*This position is located at our Penhorwood Mill & Concentrator, located 70km west of Timmins and requires daily travel to the site. Daily travel allowance provided.
