Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Assistant Library Director, the Library Clerk will oversee the daily operations of library services at both library branches. They are responsible for clerical duties including circulation activities, filing, shelving, shelf-reading, record maintenance, assisting with inventory control and with programs at both branches of the Timmins Public Library (Timmins and South Porcupine).

Duties

• Perform opening and closing library procedures
• Circulation: check in/check out all library materials, renewals, answer phones, create library cards, generate and process hold lists, place holds, retrieve books on shelves, call patrons for reserved materials, re-shelve materials, shelf read all collections, mend damaged books, establish and maintain all records relating to patron memberships
• Inspect returned material/equipment for damage
• Promote and recommend library materials and programs to patrons, register patrons for programs
• Answer general questions and direct reference inquiries to the information desk
• Assist patrons with basic use of online library catalogue and online library resources
• Assist patrons with use of computers, and answer technology related questions
• Enter room bookings and collect fees
• Provide photocopying, faxing and laminating services for patrons
• Train new staff, summer students, and co-op students
• Interpret and enforce library policies, dealing with irate patrons at times
• Assist in inventory, statistics, library surveys, weeding of materials
• Arrange shelves for special collections, new books, staff picks, holiday books, etc.
• Work with colleagues and supervisory staff to resolve all departmental problems, issues and concerns
• Assist with preparation, promotion and delivery of programs
• Assist with/conduct class visits and all other programming when librarian is not available
• Assist as requested with library displays and exhibits
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Completed 2-year community college diploma.
• Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Excel, Word and applicable applications
• Excellent communication and organizational skills with previous customer service experience
• Service, solution and results oriented
• Demonstrated ability to work with flexibility and creativity in an evolving organization
• Self-motivated and proven ability to work independently
• Demonstrated ability to work well with the public of all ages
• Detail oriented and technologically adept
• Experience/ability in the delivery of children’s programs and services a definite asset
• Current WHMIS Certificate an asset
• Required to work five (5) days in a seven (7) day work week (includes days and evenings)
• Current and clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screen required
• Fluency in both official languages (English and French) required.
