Reporting to the FAFN Shelter Director, the Fort Albany First Nation Shelter Supervisor (Timmins ON) will oversee the development, operation and management of an urban shelter serving Fort Albany individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness, abuse, and other crises in the city of Timmins. This role is essential in ensuring culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, and community-centered services that respect and integrate First Nations traditions, values, and healing methods. The Shelter Supervisor will work closely with the Shelter Director, support staff, and community partners to deliver holistic, empowering services tailored to the unique needs of First Nations clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Program Development & Delivery:
    • Develop, implement, and oversee shelter programs, including emergency support, cultural healing practices, counseling, and life-skills training, that align with the needs of First Nations clients.
    • Coordinate culturally sensitive services such as traditional healing, elder consultations, family counseling, and clinical assessments.
    • Support clients in building individualized service plans that incorporate cultural, spiritual, and personal growth elements and align with health and social recommendations.

  • Client Services & Support:
    • Foster a welcoming, safe, and respectful environment for all clients, recognizing and addressing trauma and cultural disconnection.
    • Ensure comprehensive intake assessments that identify immediate needs, personal goals, and potential challenges.
    • Maintain oversight of individualized client service plans, ensuring these plans are actively managed, reviewed, and adapted as necessary.

  • Staff Supervision & Development:

    • Supervise, schedule, and support a team of Residential Support Workers, volunteers, and any partnering service providers.
    • Provide mentorship, guidance, and training to ensure staff members are culturally aware, trauma-informed, and client-focused.
    • Facilitate regular staff meetings and training sessions.

  • Community & Partner Relations:
    • Establish and maintain relationships with community organizations, Elders, and local support services to ensure culturally aligned programming.
    • Act as a liaison between the shelter, First Nations communities, and urban service providers to develop a strong support network for clients.
    • Partner with health services, social workers, housing services, and employment programs to connect clients with a continuum of care.

  • Administration & Reporting:
    • Manage shelter budgets, track expenses, and coordinate purchasing for program-related materials and resources.
    • Ensure accurate documentation of client interactions, service plans, and incident reports, following confidentiality protocols.
    • Prepare monthly and annual reports to share progress, challenges, and successes with leadership and stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Indigenous Studies, or a related field (or equivalent experience). Additional training in trauma-informed care, cultural competence, or shelter management is preferred.

  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 3 years working in shelter, social services, or First Nations support roles, with at least 1 year in a management or supervisory capacity.
    • Demonstrated experience working with First Nations communities, preferably in urban or shelter settings.
  • Skills:
    • Strong understanding of First Nations cultural practices, challenges, and values.
    • Proven ability to manage diverse teams and provide empathetic, effective client support.
    • Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
    • Knowledge of community resources, especially those relevant to housing, mental health, substance abuse, and Indigenous wellness.

Additional Requirements:

  • Cultural Knowledge: Knowledge of First Nations history, values, cultural practices, and traditional healing is essential.
  • Cultural Competence: Ability to communicate with sensitivity and respect, recognizing the impacts of intergenerational trauma and cultural dislocation.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work occasional evenings, weekends, or on-call shifts as necessary.

Working Conditions:

This role requires emotional resilience, cultural humility, and a commitment to supporting First Nations clients with dignity, respect, and compassion.
